Here’s a link to a slightly silly article in the Western Mail about the merits of wearing flags. It refers to the colourful Welsh flag kaftan that Shirley wore at the Rugby in 1999. She sang wonderfully with Bryn Terfel at the opening of the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Close up, her groovy gown was well made and beautifully finished with sparkling stones. It looked great!
The kaftan was sold at the gowns auction in 2003 for £7,000. The winning bidder, against all the rules, was a certain Dame. She then gave it to the Welsh College of Music.
When the auctioneer asked Shirley for her paddle number (the bidder’s reference number) she immediately called “007!”

Anyway it gives me an excuse to show this fine collection of Shirley-in-a-flag pictures. Many thanks to Astrid who kindly sent them for us to enjoy.
