Fans may remember back in February 1982 that Shirley’s tour of the UK in April was cancelled due to her going into Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre, Los Angeles for an ovarian cyst operation which lasted 5 hours.
As I collect all newspaper cuttings about Shirley, when she appears in one newspaper, I have to go and browse through all of the others (yes, sad I know) to get all of the articles.
Although the tour was cancelled, it was being re-scheduled for October – so we still had the tour to look forward to. Not all of the newspaper articles said where Shirley was, but fortunately one of them mentioned Cedars-Sinai. So, I decided I would send her a get well card to wish her a quick recovery etc.

About three weeks later an envelope with a Los Angeles stamp and the initials ‘S B’ on it came though my letter box. My heart started beating ten to the dozen – yes, it was a letter from Shirley thanking me for my get well card.

The tour went ahead in September, I did not get any photos of the concert as the developers lost my film (and yes I was devastated) but I remember this concert very well as the orchestra were playing the Goldfinger intro for several minutes while fans were rushing to the stage to give Shirley gifts, in fact I believe they stopped playing for a short while.
Shortly before the concert on a TV documentary, Shirley mentioned an incident about Mars bars and that she didn’t want to see another Mars bar again. Need I say that as well as flowers, the stage was awash with Mars bars and she had to laugh each time she was given some.
After receiving all the gifts Shirley commented ‘I think I’ll go now!’
The orchestra struck Goldfinger, and the concert commenced.

I have been to many, many concerts but I have never seen Shirley receive as many gifts as I had at this concert. We were all obviously so pleased to see Shirley and wanted to show our appreciation.
Anyway, I thought I would share this letter from Shirley with you as this is the one I treasure the most.
What other superstar would take the time to write back to a fan whilst recovering in hospital after an operation?
