La Passione
Watch an extract from Chris Rea’s 1996 movie
The plot revolves around a young man’s passion for Ferrari cars
Featuring two songs written by Chris Rea for DSB
Starting with his smokey voice asking a rather petrolhead question…
Available on Audio CD, and the movie is on DVD
The film was a bit of a flop, and didn’t go on general release
Chris and Shirley met by chance on an airline flight. They got on well, and agreed the project
Sadly, Chris Rea had to stop touring in 2006 due to a long-term pancreas illness

Review of La Passione on Amazon:
“I have admired Chris Rea’s music over the years but it was only recently that I have come to love everything the great man produces and they come no better than this fantastic album.
This album features classical tracks such as Dov’e Il Signore and the title track La Passione to the brilliant ballad “When Grey Skies Turn To Blue”.
Every track on this album is truly a modern day classic, so kick off your shoes, turn up the volume and enjoy the music of Chris Rea”

Lyrics
Song 1 - Shirley, Do You Own A Ferrari?
[Chris Rea:]
Shirley
Do you own a Ferrari?
Do you live in a wonderful place?
And the smile on your face
Is of joyful laughter, happy ever after
[Shirley Bassey:]
Yes, I own a Ferrari
Yes, my life is your dream
And I live in a wonderful place
And the smile on my face
Is not sycophantic
I’m just a true romantic
How about you?
What is so wrong
With a heart with a dream
A soul without hope
Is a terrible scene
Deep in the coldest and darkest of nights
I hang on to my dream
Keep it locked in my sights
What is so wrong
With a heart with a dream
A soul without hope is a terrible scene
Deep in the coldest and darkest of nights
I hang on to my dream
Keep it locked in my sights
[Chris Rea:]
Shirley, do you own a Ferrari?
Shirley…

Song 2: La Passione
I stand alone
Without a care
Open the door
But no-one’s there
The lonely night
My only friend
Love’s wrongs are right
I can’t defend
La Passione
La Passione
La Passione
La Passione
And now I know
What I’ve become
It haunts me so
But I’ll go on and on
I know the pain inside
Is the price you pay to ride
Into the brightest flame
Never the same again
La Passione
La Passione
La Passione
La Passione
You dare to dream
Take the chance and go
Desire has taken hold
Now the passion haunts you so
La Passione
La Passione
La Passione
La Passione

Does Shirley own a Ferrari?
Not that anyone is aware of. She is more associated with Rolls Royce.
For many years she had a chauffeured brown Shadow with personal number plates.
It overturned once, but nobody was hurt because the car was solid.
At Christie’s she arrived in a chauffeured Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
On the 1970s BBC TV series she travelled in the back of a Jaguar and another Shadow.
In the 2006 M&S Christmas ad she turned up at the ice palace in a Silver Cloud.
So Rolls rules!
