Guardian Profile + Shoes for Charity Auction

‘When you hear of a new Shirley Bassey, that’s nonsense.

Somebody like that only comes along once in a lifetime’

Here’s a super link to a profile in The Guardian (London newspaper)

Thanks to Peter for the link

Dame Shirley Bassey Shoes for Auction

From Thomas J Boal

Dear Peggy,
I am a visually impaired college student in Scotland an I am organising a Charity Auction night on the 15 June 2007.
Recently I wrote to Dame Shirley Bassey asking for a donation of memorabila, to my amazement I received a pair of her shoes which are both signed.
Could you possibly post my details on your blog so the Dame Shirley Bassey fans can get a chance to own the fabulous singer’s shoes?

All proceeds from the auction will go direct to St Dunstan’s the charity for ex-Service men and women who are blind or visually impaired.
The shoes have been valued by Christie’s auction house London and the reserve is £150.

To make a commissioned bid please contact me on
where interested fans can obtain more information and make a bid.

Bids will be received up till midday on the 14th June 2007 the day before the auction.

I would really like for them to go to someone who really has a genuine interest in Dame Shirley Bassey.

I hope that you can help me in my quest to find a good home for these shoes.

I have also arranged for them to be put on eBay.
Yours faithfully
Thomas J Boal
Auction Organiser and St Dunstaner

Good luck Thomas, I hope you raise £££££s for your wonderful charity

As soon as your page on eBay opens, it will be added here
It’s certainly worth visiting St Dunstan’s excellent web site:-

“St Dunstan’s wants to help as many ex-Service men and women as possible, regardless of how and when they lost their sight.

Some St Dunstaners lost their sight in wartime on active service, often suffering associated injuries as well. But many have been injured while on training exercises, have been blinded by disease or accident or suffer impaired vision brought on by old age.”

Shirley in Scheveningen

I was pleased to receive this message from my Dutch friend Rien and his lovely wife Iet:-
“Dear Peggy,

We are back from a vacation at the spa resort of Scheveningen in Holland.

We went into the legendary Kurhaus Hotel, right on the beach, for a cup of tea.

In the bar area of the restaurant is a photo gallery with world famous stars who performed at the Kurhaus in the past.
They include Edith Piaf, Jacques Brell, Count Basie, Neil Sedaka, Yves Montand and many more.
And of course there was a beautiful photograph of Dame Shirley Bassey placed high on the wall between other photographs.
I think the photo is taken around 1970 but I am not sure about that.

Shirley performed more times at the Kurhaus. She also appeared on 21st March 1992 for the Ronald McDonald Childrens Fund (see scan of the newspaper below)

Peggy I hope these photographs are interesting for your blog I hope you can use them!!

For now all best wishes and we hope to hear from you soon!

With love !! Rien and Iet”
