Viva Diva (part 6 /Last Part)

Followed by credits and a bonus
Thanks to Pieter

Written by Madonna / David W. Foster

Released on the 1996 album The Show Must Go On

Madonna reached No. 6 on the US Billboard with this song in 1995

I heard that a reviewer of Shirley’s opening night at The Royal Festival Hall 1998 wrote:

“Several thousand people will never again be able to hear Madonna’s ‘You’ll See’ without picturing Shirley clutching her bosom and turning Madonna’s wimpy ballad into something gothic and huge.”

Lyrics

You think that I can’t live without your love

You’ll see,

You think I can’t go on another day.

You think I have nothing

Without you by my side,

You’ll see

Somehow, some way

You think that I can never laugh again

You’ll see,

You think that you destroyed my faith in love.

You think after all you’ve done

I’ll never find my way back home,

You’ll see

Somehow, someday

Chorus:

All by myself

I don’t need anyone at all

I know I’ll survive

I know I’ll stay alive,

All on my own

I don’t need anyone this time

It will be mine

No one can take it from me

You’ll see

You think that you are strong, but you are weak

You’ll see,

It takes more strength to cry, admit defeat.

I have truth on my side,

You only have deceit

You’ll see, somehow, someday

Chorus 2:

All by myself

I don’t need anyone at all

I know I’ll survive

I know I’ll stay alive,

I’ll stand on my own

I won’t need anyone this time

It will be mine

No one can take it from me

You’ll see

You’ll see, you’ll see

You’ll see, mmmm, mmmm

I Want To Know What Love Is

This page is devoted entirely to a spine-tingling song

One of my personal favourites – I’ll always remember the privilege of seeing Shirley sing it at the Royal Festival Hall (from Row 8) – with astounding vocals. The orchestra was in perfect form, including the rock fuzz guitarist and bass…

Here’s a video hot in from Pieter, continuing the series of the TV show Viva Diva, broadcast in North America on New Year’s Eve 1998.

Including an introduction from Shirley…

I Want To Know What Love Is

Written by Mick Jones

Released in 1991 on a CD single (as bonus track) and on the album Keep The Music Playing
.

Live recording available on The Birthday Concert and The Diamond Collection.

And on the videos Live in Cardiff, An Audience With Shirley Bassey and Divas Are Forever.

In 1985 Foreigner reached No. 1 in the US Billboard with this song. Foreigner’s first and only No. 1 single. Mick Jones was Foreigner’s lead guitarist, but he also worked as singer and song-writer.

Shirley Bassey said about this song: “I love the Foreigner song. I’ve attached myself to it, and so has the audience. They’ve never heard a solo artist sing it before.”

Lyrics

I gotta take a little time

A little time to think things over

I better read between the lines

In case I need it when I’m older

Now this mountain I must climb

Feels like a world upon my shoulders

Through the clouds I see love shine

It keeps me warm as life grows colder

In my life there’s been heartache and pain

I don’t know if I can face it again

Can’t stop now, I’ve travelled so far

To change my lonely life
I wanna know what love is

I want you to show me

I wanna feel what love is

I know you can show me

I’m gonna take a little time

A little time to look around me

I’ve got nowhere left to hide

It looks like love has finally found me
In my life there’s been heartache and pain

I don’t know if I can face it again

Can’t stop now, I’ve travelled so far

To change my lonely life

I wanna know what love is

I want you to show me

I wanna feel what love is

I know you can show me

I wanna know what love is

I want you to show me

I wanna feel what love is

I know you can show me

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me

I wanna feel what love is

I know you can show me
(Fading down)
I wanna know what love is

I want you to show me

I wanna feel what love is

I know you can show me

The backing by the New Jersey Mass Choir was a touch of genius for this beautiful gospel-inspired ballad

Everyone loves a grand fireworks display, better set to music, and even better set to DSB’s music!
Great display, you guys! What a wild choice of song 🙂

The beat goes on, and Aidan makes these welcome new comments on the next BGO Records album release. This has been an interesting discussion for the past few days.

“Hi Peggy,

Again on the BGO-subject: David has a point there, being that “The Magic Is You” album is more suitable with “You Take My Heart Away” stylewise than”Yesterdays”.

BGO would suprise us if as a bonus they put on both single versions of “This Is My Life” (USA and European version) and the b-side “Copacabana”. But I doubt that, because they had that chance with”Runaway” on the “Love Life And Feelings”-release but they didn’t.

Meanwhile, I hope that “Yesterdays” still will be released on CD, maybe together with “12 Of Those Songs” or “Shirley Stops The Show”.

Or – and I am on a roll here – one CD with the two 60’s albums and the other one with “Yesterdays”.

Also I heard a rumour (don’t know if it’s true) that the original tapes of all the Towerbell singles are lost, due to the fact that this company no longer exists.

Take care!

Aidan”

Thanks Aidan – I hope that rumour is not true. It would be a great shame if those master tapes have been lost.

Any more comments and views from anyone are welcome.

Whatever’s on the next release, I’ll be in the queue to buy it!
