Doing this blog has opened my eyes to the international appeal of DSB.
I never realised quite how much she is a true World Superstar.
The only big country I haven’t heard from is China. Population 1,323 million versus 60 million in the UK – that’s some audience! 🙂
But fans have hit the blog fron Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea etc. and there are plenty of fans throughout the Pacific. Not least our mates the Ozzies and Kiwis, who are great fun and massively enthusiastic.
So it was a pleasure to hear today from Terence Lee in Malaysia, where DSB has a surprisingly good following.
In one of the Cardiff concerts, you will see a Chinese man giving the Dame flowers the minute she stepped out for Goldfinger. I know the timing was bad as she is usually nervous at this point before starting the 1st song but I was panic-stricken and had to get it over with so that I could relax and enjoy the show.
I will always treasure the pictures the Dame personalized for me. She even sent a colour Christmas photo to Malaysia one year after I wrote her. What a gracious Dame to her fans!”
Thanks very much Terence Lee. If you have any scans please send them through.
Best wishes to you and all the fans in your beautiful country.

Tonight’s spectacular opening sequence of the new ITV1 ‘Dancing On Ice’ featured DSB’s
Get The Party Started – Big time!
“Prepare to be dazzled!” said the announcer, and viewers were.
Every kind of sparkling effect was used – stunning ice dancing, fireworks, laser lights and special effects.
All matched by Dame Shirley’s glittering hit!
Let’s hope the sequence gets uploaded onto YouTube for the world to see.

This song has become a worldwide standard theme for any spectacular opening.
It is bringing Dame Shirley to public attention, possibly more than ever since Goldfinger.
Thanks to Ian, a fan who knows EVERYTHING about gowns, for this info…
“Hi Peggy! Gown Guru here!!
Just to let you know the black gown in the sleeve cover with Vikki Carr is the infamous ‘Butterfly’ gown first seen Live at the Talk Of The Town nightclub in1972.
Then at numerous shows between 1972 and 1977, and album covers.
Will do a write up on it soon!”
Please also see the page dated 12th January about Vikki Carr
The blog is going through a bit of a Memorabilia phase at the moment. There is always plenty of fascinating history to enjoy after five decades of a distinguished career.
My personal friends Sheila and Donald are the most fab and loyal of fans. Here’s their response to Pieter’s current series of videos…
“JUST TUNED INTO THE BLOG ABOUT ST DAVID’S HALL IN 1985 – WE WERE THERE!! IN THE FRONT ROW …AFTER QUEUEING ALL NIGHT… AND YOU CAN SEE DONALD GIVING HER THE FLOWERS WHICH, SOMEHOW OR OTHER, WE BROUGHT ALL THE WAY TO CARDIFF FROM THE MIDLANDS.
AND YOU CAN SEE THEM ALL THE TIME ON THE VIDEO – NOW YOU CAN’T GET ANY MORE FAMOUS FLOWERS THAN THAT!!
IT REMINDS ME A BIT OF PETER KAY – FLOWERS – BLUE RIBBONS ETC; ETC; WE LIKED HIM AND HIS GARLIC BREAD!!
IN THE VIDEO OF DSB OPENING THE INTERNATIONAL ARENA IN CARDIFF, A FEW YEARS LATER, DONALD’S FACE AND MINE ARE SHOWN (OH GOODNESS, WHAT FAME!!!) IT WAS A WONDERFUL NIGHT-
ALAN ,ONE OF THE GUYS WHO ALWAYS BAKED HER A CAKE, BROUGHT ONE FOR US (A GROUP OF US) AND ALSO A BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE AND WE REALLY HAD A PARTY – YOU MIGHT SAY THAT WE GOT THE PARTY STARTED THEN!!”
What happy memories! I met Alan the Cake Man at Christie’s reception. But haven’t seen him since then. Does anybody know how he is? For years he presented Shirley with a beautiful home-made and decorated cake. They went down a treat backstage after the show!
