Goldfinger weekend 4

So that’s almost it for Goldfinger Weekend

One more time!…

Thanks to Scot

Gert Fröbe  (1913 – 1988), was a German actor who starred in many films. He was brilliant as the arch villain, Auric Goldfinger, and in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as Baron Bomburst.

Due to his thick German accent, Fröbe was dubbed in some of his classic roles, including by British actor Michael Collins in Goldfinger.

The song was composed by John Barry, with lyrics by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse and is widely acknowledged as a classic of its genre. Famously, co-producer Harry Saltzman hated the song and only agreed to use it when persuaded by Cubby Broccoli.

John Barry’s score included instrumental arrangements of the title theme, as well as the Bond theme from Dr. No. He made heavy use of brass. The distinctive music for Goldfinger’s henchman, Oddjob, makes use of repeated strokes on a metallic anvil. Metallic chimes are also heard in many scenes associated with Oddjob or gold, notably that in which the dead golden girl is discovered. The very effective use of music and various sound effects in the film won it an academy award for sound editing.

The 50th Grammy Awards are being held tonight at the Staples Center, Los Angeles.

Broadcast live in the USA on CBS.

Will she, won’t she? It’s doubtful if DSB will turn up for the induction of Goldfinger into the Hall of Fame, even less that she will perform it. Nothing has been confirmed, but nothing has been ruled out. Ever the optimist!

If the Grammys are Non-DSB, the show will still be well worth watching. It’s music’s biggest night.

In the UK it will be on ITV2 at 9pm on Monday 11th February.

Kanye West has eight nominations this year.

Aretha Franklin is Person of the Year 2008.

Amy Winehouse has six nominations including Album of the Year.  I’ve been told by a fan that DSB is said to love the album.

Watch Back to Black here

Amy’s visa arrived too late to travel, with all the logistics and timing complications. She will be performing by satellite broadcast from London. Press Association link here.

Sir Paul McCartney is up for three awards.

Watch Paul’s Dance Tonight here

Corinne Bailey Rae, a British singer-songwriter, is also up for Song of the Year.

Watch Corinne here

And Lily Allen’s debut Alright, Still is nominated for Best Alternative Music Album. She performed at the Fashion Rocks show last November, on the same bill as DSB. I like her bouncy songs and unpretentious London accent.

Watch Lily at Frocks here

Why not watch DSB at Frocks too?

A pretty good showing for the Brits!

And finally, if you like it loud…

Rock band, the Foo Fighters, are up for multiple awards.

Get blasted here – not for those who want a quiet life 🙂

Los Angeles speculation 8

“Ah, Meester Bond, I have my song on my gold iPod. Continuous play.”

More about Goldfinger’s recognition tonight, on Goldfinger Weekend…

From Secret Agent 007 and three quarters:

Also known as Hot Hope in LA:

“Dear Peggy, So jazzed to hear about Shirley’s GTPS climbing the Billboard dance charts! Way to go! I’ve been eagerly scanning all Grammy news in the hope that Shirley’s name might be mentioned, and I’d thought I’d share this latest piece of news with you….. Apparently, Kanye West, who’s up for 8 Grammy Awards, and as you might know, lost his mother suddenly last year, has been in a self-imposed exile. Producers of the show were wondering if he would appear at the awards. Now it seems that he’s slated to appear “with a surprise guest”. This got me thinking, Peggy, with all the earlier talk of Shirley wanting to do a duet with Kanye!……Is it possible?!……..Of course, for all we know, he might show up with his grandmother’s uncle’s niece, and my speculation could be totally wrong…….In any case, I’m really looking forward to the show, which is celebrating 50 years (with all the incredible talent performing, including Cirque du Soleil), and I’m hoping that the producers have the sense to mention Shirley and “Goldfinger”.

Happy Days,

Thanks, Hope. We can dream on 🙂

It’s going to be a star-studded show whatever happens.

The Cirque du Soleil is a world famous WOW!

I saw them in London. They are the hottest ticket in Las Vegas with their stunning presentation of ‘LOVE’, a show full of remastered Beatles songs. FAB!

In theStates it’s live on CBS. In the UK it’s on ITV2 Monday 11th February at 9pm.

Goldfinger Weekend 3

Goldfinger is one of the 100 best movie soundtracks.

The Telegraph has compiled a list.

From ‘A Fistful of Dollars’ to ‘Some Like it Hot’, from Mozart and Wagner to Rodgers & Hammerstein… the Sunday Telegraph presents cinema’s greatest scores.

This feature appears in the special Bafta issue of Seven magazine, free with this week’s Sunday Telegraph.

Another triumph on Goldfinger Weekend 🙂

John Barry, 1964

“So perfectly judged are all John Barry’s Bond scores that they could fill half this list. But this, performed by Shirley Bassey, is surely The One.”

The whole feature makes a good Sunday read.
