It has been announced that sadly Danny La Rue died on 31st May after a short illness.  He died of cancer at the age of 81 years.  He and Shirley had known each other for many years and he was regularly in the audience at her concerts.

He was a drag artist but hated being called that preferring to be known as a ‘comic in a frock’!  His wigs and gowns were spectacular and at one time he was the highest paid entertainer in Britain.

When Shirley came back to Britain after her ‘excile’ she stated she came back as she’d heard that ‘Danny La Rue is trying to take my place’!  Danny also appeared on the second ‘This Is My Life’ tribute to Shirley.  Some of the photos are taken from that show.

  1. I have been a costume designer for many years and its amazing how people have come out of the woodwork to comment on Mr La Rue. he was no saint, and his alleged generosity was never extended to me or many other people. he had a very casutic tongue and very insulting and offend many people of the years, all of whom i’m sure have a story to tell! so yes he worked well, but he wa no angel , and those of us who knew him well, know the real Danny La rue, warts and all!
