Dame Shirley’s album ‘The Performance’ entered the UK album chart at number 20. Not surprisingly some fans are disappointed that it did not enter much higher in the top 10. I think everyone connected with the album should be very pleased and proud of what they have achieved. It has been pointed out that she was up against strong competition and the sales the album made would have made it a Top 5 album a few weeks ago.
I still think there is a possibility that the album may climb up the charts. I hope I’m right. Television always help sell an album. Although she has done lots of radio promotion she hasn’t really been on TV. I know we had the Electric Proms but that was screened late at night and on BBC2. In the next week or so there are various appearances on popular shows and that can only help keep the album in the public eye. It is also BBC Radio 2 ‘Album of the Week’ from Monday 16th November.
I still think it’s a great achievement to have an album in the charts when you are 72 years old and in the sixth decade of recording. Well done Dame Shirley. Many congratulations!
For some strange reason HMV in all their wisdom have not got the album listed in their Top 75 and therefore not displaying it. Just a few copies in the ‘Easy Listening’ section. I decided to boycott them and go to another store to buy the CD and DVD I wanted.
