I was honored to see Dame Shirley Bassey for 2 years in a row back in the 1970’s at Carnegie Hall. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to see her at this age today still sounding like when I saw her back then. They say Whitney Houston had the greatest voice. I disagree. Whitney had a good voice but nothing compared to the incomparable Shirley Bassey. No one can compare vocally to Shirley. I am amazed that she can still hit all the important notes to her songs. I only wish that she would appear one last time at Carnegie Hall. It would be a joy.

You are so right. Shirley Bassey was ahead of her time. Shirley had a difficult social climate to deal with (racism and sexism) in the US. Remember US television was “puritan” during Shirley’s hey-day and would have had a major fit if her performances, dresses and all, were televised. People in the US took issue when Shirley performed Goldfinger live, they never thought that the singer of the song was black. However, US television was all too happy to broadcast Connie Francis’ weak, off-key version of it, When Whitney came along it was a different time.
Shirley was the one who opened doors for artists like Whitney Houston but has never really gotten the credit for it. However, I will not take away from Whitney’s accomplishments. I love them both. I wish Whitney was as mentally strong as Shirley. Shirley has never allowed anyone or anything to bring her down. Whitney could have taken a page out of Shirley’s book when it came to dealing with parasitic relationships like Bobby Brown…
