For this New Year’s Eve we have this fabulous performance from New Year’s Eve 1996 by Dame Shirley for German TV. I hope you enjoy this performance and I would like say a special thank you to: Andre, Audrey, Carl, Jill, Rien and Susan for all their help with the blog this year.
This performance was recorded at the beginning of December shortly after Shirley recorded her 60th. birthday special for the BBC. The recordings for the show took place in the Dutch Endemol studios in Aalsmeer for the German TV station SAT 1.
Dame Shirley sang three songs: two from her album ‘The show must go on’ and ‘I am what I am’.
From ‘The show must go on’ she sings: ‘Can I touch you there’ and ‘He kills everything’ which was the theme song for a German TV-series called ‘The gang’.

Sorry but that wig makes her look 20 years older than she did at the time and the green tuille (or whatever it is called) bunged on the front of that dress was not at all becoming. I never rated this show too highly – I thought it was a cheap production and the guests were second rate (John Prescott, Ainsley Harriott – please!). It was nowhere near the standard that she deserved. Sadly, I beleive she had a cold at the time of the recording as well but she was a trouper,

this performance is not the HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHIRLEY which I did not like as a format. An ordinary special would have been better but sometimes to get the airtime you have to co-operate and as with the tv series(s) and specials you as an artist do not get to choose what is left out or in
