She is a Super Star, a power lady. Sunday night Shirley Bassey (76 “Goldfinger”) arrived in Hamburg. Yesterday she also went through rehearsals with the Hamburger Symphonikern in the Laeszhalle. The diva was picked up at 3 p.m. by Limousine from the Nobelhotel ‘Vier Jahreszeiten’ (she has a suite on the 5th floor). At 3.30 rehearsals started and took one and a half hour. Bassey said: ‘When I have to rehearse I don’t have much time to view much of the city but I will definitely go shopping at ‘Am neuen Wall’.

A gentle reminder that tonight (11th January) the BBC Four TV Channel in the UK is showing two programmes on Dame Shirley. First to be screened at 9.15pm (21.15) is a repeat showing of the 2009 documentary ‘Imagine’. This will be followed at 10.15pm (22.15) by a new programme ‘Bassey At The BBC’ which is 60 mins long. It will include clips of Shirley’s shows recorded by the BBC from the 1966 ‘Show Of The Week’ right through to the ‘Electric Proms’ from 2009.
These programmes are being shown to celebrate the fact that Dame Shirley turned 76 years old this week. As far as we fans are concerned it’s terrific that this fabulous lady is being recognised for the outstanding performer she is. Hopefully this will be the first of many tributes this special year as she also celebrates 60 years in show business.
