  1. Thank you Pieter. Yes, that’s why I enjoy Dame Shirley Bassey’s music, it’s very real and lot’s of emotion. I remember the album, and remember the above album cover which Dame Shirley looks lovely.

  2. That is a pretty nice review. As a native New Yorker, I wish I had known about her back in those days. (I would have been 16 at the time of that concert. I was an anti-disco classic rock guy back in the day.) I’m a little heartsick over all the Bassey concerts I could have seen right here in NYC.

    1. I feel the same way…but didn’t see any advertised in the papers. Guess at that time life was happening, and wasn’t thinking about it. Oh well, that’s life Jed. Maybe we will get a chance if we look hard enough. God bless!

  3. Great article…..the writer really nailed Dame Shirley perfectly. “What cannot be disputed is that Bassey is an actress in song”.That is one of the many things I love about her voice and her performances. The article was written 1975 and she is still the same. She really does tell us about emotion……Thanks for posting.

  4. The all around BEST female voice in pop music. Grew up in Brooklyn ‘s Bedford Sty. area and can’t believe how I became a fan through an aunt of mine who played her stuff more than any other artist she had, from Diana Ross to James Brown. Started in ’76 for me at l6 and became hooked to this day. Fortunately got to see her live for the first of about 10 concerts in 1980-‘ 1997. Even got to meet her briefly once outside Carnegie Hall and got a kiss and an autograph in ’85. She was dynamite then and only got better and better. Very true to what Jed and Ms. Claudia indicated, she never got a big amount of advertisement back then- but she always managed to pack the auditoriums up there, weither it was Carnegie, or Westbury Music Fair, or even opening a brand new Broadway theater. The absolute QUEEN OF THE CLASSIC POP sound. Hope you all get the chance too. But trust me, even though she doesn’t depend on special gimmicks, as many artist do these days, you’ll never get enough of Bassey. I’d still love to see her perform again. Her sound is timeless. Thank goodness for the enternet.

    1. I agree Emmit, Dame Shirley Bassey doesn’t need props, even at 76…and that is the sign of one who has real talent, and is a legend. Glad you got a chance to see, and get an autograph. I know you will always cherish that memory. God bless!!!
