FROM THE ARCHIVE 377 -1970-

My Way  is a fabulous song from the 1970 Something album and was performed live many, many times by Dame Shirley Bassey in concerts and on numerous TV shows and performances. It is difficult to choose a good live version for this blog so I just picked the two you see below random. Below the sheet music you will find the studio version of the song.

Sheet Music 1970 My Way

Lyrics:

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friends, I’ll say it clear,
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain.

I’ve lived a life that’ s full.
I’ve traveled each and ev’ry highway;
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets, I’ve had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.

I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried.
I had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that;
And may I say – not in a shy way,
Oh no, oh no not me,
I did it my way.

For what is a woman, what has she got?
If not herself, then she has naught.
To say the things she truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows –
And did it my way!

  1. Great song from the era when they knew how to write them. Outside of Sinatra, I have never heard it sung with such conviction, until it got the Bassey treatment.

  2. Her stama and dedication in keeping her voice in shape is totally
    incredible. This lady could sing anything. My ultimate would be
    attending a concert of Dame Shirley Bassey ! She certainly has
    her own style and class.

  3. Thank you Pieter. Excellent archive, and DSB just gets better as the years go by. I believe I heard her say in a later concert that she no longer sings the song My Way, that she dropped it from her concert song list. This song would be number one on the charts today, with the issues of female individuality and self acceptance being highlighted even more so in the media today.

  4. Great video choices Pieter – it’s am amazing song especially when given the Bassey treatment, it could have been written for her. Seeing her sing this live in a concert and giving it everything she had is something I shall never forget; the audience reaction afterwards was deafening – bravo!

    Terry.
