What About Today?

Today I would like to play one of my favourite songs from the DVD  ‘On TV Shirley Bassey’.
The song was recorded along with love Story for the 1971 show ‘Whittaker’s world’. Furthermore you can find below a newspaper article from the same year. (From the George Webb collection).

What About Today?
Music written by David Shire and words by Richard Maltby Jr.

Released 1970 on a single and on the album Something. This album was re-released digitally remastered on CD and this song is also available on the collection Bassey – The EMI/UA Years.

Shirley Bassey performed this song live in shows sometimes 1970/71, and this song invariably opened her live performances during the early 1970’s.

This song is originally from the unsuccessful Barbra Streisand 1969 album called “What About Today?”

David Shire (born 1937) who wrote this song is an American composer who has successful written music for stage, screen, and television. The soundtrack album of Shire’s score for Saturday Night Fever won him a Grammy Award 1977. His single “It Goes Like It Goes,” written for 1979’s Norma Rae, earned him an Oscar. Additionally he won many other prices and had several Emmy nominations.

Richard Maltby, Jr. (born 1914) was a soundtrack lyricist. Shire and Maltby included this song into a musical of their songs 1977 “Starting Here, Starting Now” which had 120 performances in the Barbarann Theatre Restaurant in New York.

Lyrics:

The tears I’m shedding now
I hear will dry in time
The fears I’m fearing now
I hear will die in time
But while I wait around for tomorrow
Watching life drift away
What about
Yes
What about
Today?

I know if I just wait
The sun will shine some day
And when it does
The weather will be fine someday
And while the skies I search for tomorrow
Stay that same shade of grey
What about
Yes
What about
Today?

‘Til nirvana comes
What about today?
‘Til messiah comes
What about today?
‘Til the mountains move
And oceans part
And angels sing
And life can start
What about
Yes
What about
Today?

I can’t help wondering
If tomorrow ever comes
And what’s my life been lived for
If it never comes
I’ve heard a lot of toasts to tomorrow
But none of them ever say
What about today?
What about today

‘Til nirvana comes
What about today?
‘Til messiah comes
What about today?
‘Til the mountains move
And oceans part
And angels sing
And life can start
What about
Yes
What about
Today?

I can’t help wondering
If tomorrow ever comes
And what’s my life been lived for
If it never comes
I’ve heard a lot of toasts to tomorrow
But none of them ever say
What about today?
What about today?

What about
Yes
What about
Today?
