Programme 2013

For today’s blog the programme from the performance from 2013 Dame Shirley Bassey gave in Hamburg. It is the last one we have but we have not run out of programmes yet since fans have sent in new ones that have not been on the blog in this series. So we will start from the top. If you have a programme that was not on here please let us know.

And now about the programme that was called ‘A Celebration of the Film Goddesses of Our Time’ in the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg.
First of all it was a wonderful performance Dame Shirley gave. She sang with a 60 piece orchestra and when she started with Goldfinger it was almost like the original recording that was also recorded with a 60 piece orchestra. The intention was that she would sing three songs but eventually she did five songs. FIVE songs and SIX standing ovations. She sang: Goldfinger, Something, Diamonds Are Forever, The Lady Is A Tramp, I Am What I Am.
The intention of the show was a tribute to the James Bond songs and it was not immediately announced that Dame Shirley would perform. At first I had no intention to go to Hamburg through snow and blizzards in the middle of winter to see her perform only three songs but I got two tickets from the Dame herself and decided to go and did not regret it at all of course. It was the last performance I saw of her with the exception of the recording of the 80th birthday show. We were sworn to secrecy not to tell that Dame Shirley would perform until the official announcement.
Below we have a video that gives an impression of the concert but if you want to fully enjoy it click on the Soundcloud player below.

As most fans know, Dame Shirley Bassey has donated and raised a lot of funds for the Noah’s Ark Appeal.
Since 2000, they have developed a state-of-the-art hospital for children in Cardiff. Up till then, Wales was the only country in Europe without a dedicated national children’s hospital.

Dame Shirley was central among celebrities to promote the project. She donated half the proceeds from the Christie’s gowns auction, and participated in other events.
On a vist to the wards, she got down on the floor to play with the kids.

Dame Shirley Bassey is to be a patron of a children’s hospital’s fundraising charity. The Cardiff-born singer joins Catherine Zeta Jones and Charlotte Church as patrons of the Noah’s Ark Appeal.

She has been a supporter of the campaign to build the Children’s Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for several years and a cancer ward there is named after her.

A further £4 million is needed to complete the hospital, which admitted its first patients three years ago.

Dame Shirley said: “Having supported the appeal for years, I am thrilled to have become a patron of what I consider an extremely worthy and high-profile charity.

“Phase One was a magnificent, pioneering achievement, and I cannot wait to see what will be achieved through the coming campaign.

“The people of Wales have spoken – they want world-class healthcare for their children, and I have no doubt that the appeal will deliver.”

In 2003, Dame Shirley donated £125,000 to the appeal from the sale of her dresses at an auction at Christie’s in London marking her half-century in show business.

She visited sick children being treated at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, while the children’s hospital was under construction on the same site.

There was also a gown auction for the Children’s Hospital by the Noah’s Ark Appeal and it was the dress Dame Shirley wore that night at the ball.

Superfan Susan won a dress at the Christies gown auction in 2003 and she is being interviewed here too.
