Dame Shirley Bassey reached her 80th Birthday on January 8th 2017, and to mark the occasion I summoned the old cassette deck into service to listen again to an off-air recording I made from BBC Radio 2 on Good Friday 1991 – ‘Shirley Bassey In Cabaret’ (though billed in Radio Times as ‘..In Concert’). Dame Shirley apparently appeared at Manchester’s Piccadilly Hotel for four consecutive nights from 31st Oct-3rd Nov 1990, but its not clear if this broadcast is an edited recording of the performances on just one evening or perhaps a ‘best of’ recording from more than one day. Someone will know I’m sure. Enjoy it through the hiss of old cassette tape! James Alexander-Gordon is on continuity duties.
The show was broadcast by Radio 2 as a special for Easter in 1991. As luck would have it, that day on Radio 2 was not without Eurovision either – Ken Bruce was on air at 20.00 that night for a ‘simulcast’ with BBC 1 of that year’s Song For Europe!

Diamonds and Divas are forever! DSB 80th birthday!!!

Wow, Dame Shirley Bassey 80th birthday! What can I say?… Everything about her has already been said. In a nutshell, for me she is a great talent voice, glamour, sophistication, humor, excitement and enchantment! A solid career, without scandals and with a lot of artistic quality. A great woman, a simple, friendly and accessible persona, respectable star worthy of the honored royal title DAME! She has won countless awards and thrilled thousands of fans at her fantastic shows around the world! So amazing costumes, the famous covers, hairstyles, and incredible charisma made her an icon, a legend, a DIVA! And just like diamonds are forever, she’s a “DIVA FOREVER” deep in the heart of all her fans! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Accept this simple homage of your Brazilian fan. I chose some photos that show a little of his brilliant career.

Happy Birthday Dame Shirley!

The Blog Team wishes Dame Shirley a wonderful birthday with lots of love and good health. She is enjoying her holiday in Mexico right now with her family and we hope she has a wonderful time there and is enjoying the sunshine. I am sure I can speak on behalf of all her loving fans!
