Short plot summary of the movie “The Rose” from the internet: Bette Midler plays “Rose”, an artist strikingly similar to Janis Joplin. The film follows Rose’s career during her last tour. Her rock and roll lifestyle of Drugs, Sex, and Rock and Roll and constant touring lead her to an inevitable breakdown.
Lyrics:
Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower
And you, it’s only seed
It’s the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It’s the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It’s the one who won’t be taken
Who can not seem to give
And the soul afraid of dying
That never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think, that love is only
For the lucky and the strong
Just remember, in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed
That with the sun’s love
In the spring becomes the rose

Pieter thanks for this. I like the way Shirley interprets this song and I think it is well suited to her voice; I don’t ever recall seeing her sing this ‘live’ in a concert?

Claudia, I have been fortunate to see Dame Shirley ‘live’ on numerous occasions in the UK since 1970; cannot recall how many times but NEVER disappointed. The last time was in Hamburg with my dear friends Pieter and Astrid – she was sensational!
