Duets # 9

For this blog the first of two duets Shirley Bassey did with Mike Douglas from the April 8th. 1969 Mike Douglas show. Song: You’re Just In Love -I Wonder Why-.  From the Broadway Show “Call Me Madam” (1950) (Irving Berlin).
Shirley Bassey was co-host on the Mike Douglas Show for the whole week and dressed very conservative as she wasn’t allowed to wear any of her revealing gowns for the American TV.
Below also a newspapaper article from 1969. (From the George Webb collection)

Mike Douglas: I hear singing and there’s no one there
I smell blossoms and the trees are bare
All day long I seem to walk on air I wonder why,
I wonder why and I keep talking in my sleep at night
And what’s more I’ve lost my appetite
Stars that used to twinkle in the skie
Are twinkling in my eye,
I wonder why
Shirley Bassey: You don’t need analyzing
It is not so surprising
That you feel very strange but nice
Your heart goes pitter patter
I know just what’s the matter
Because I’ve been there once or twice
Put your head on my shoulder
I need someone who’s older
A rub down with a velvet glove
There is nothing you can take
To relieve that pleasant ache
You’re not sick, you’re just in love

MALE & FEMALE VOICES INTERWOVEN:

  1. OH MY WORD!!!!! This is fabulous!!! I had heard that she was the host on this show. I saw the clip where Sergio came out and they were interviewed as a couple. It was so great to see. And now this clip and duet with Mike Douglas.(I did not know he could sing so good) Shirley is amazing. What talent on this duet. I sure hope you have more of this Mike Douglas week to share. If not, blessings to you for sharing this gem. I appreciate Mike Douglas being honest and saying she is the best and most exciting in the world. Wonderful, thank you Pieter.

  2. LOL, I just now saw your statement about her being dressed conservatively. I was thinking I have never seen every inch of her covered so, except the time she was on Johnny Carlson. This is a great article too.

  3. When I heard that the great Shirley Bassey was going to be a co-host all week, I got prepared. After school, I nearly ran home to complete my homework. Great week with Shirley as co-host. (I remember, also, when Mike Douglas had Judy Garland on the show towards the end of her life; showing off her red costume.) Mike was warm, approachable; great interviewer. Thanks for the clip, Pieter.
