Today Shirley Bassey’s performance on the Midem Festival in Cannes from the year 1982. The evening was hosted by Michel Legrand. Dame Shirley Bassey opened the festival. She sang: New York-New York All By Myself & Goldfinger, The show was released on video and 2 LPs and called The Sound Of Applause . The medley at the end of the show by all the participating artists, was not included nor was All By Myself although it was mentioned on the cover of the Video and the LP. The whole show was televised in France (where it was called ‘Le Grand Studio’) and some South American countries and we were able to find the full show.
‘Let me dance till my shoes cry’ was the line that appealed to Dame Shirley Bassey and made her decide to record the song The Living Tree. It was Never The Bride who ‘prevented’ her from retirement and all of a sudden there were two hits: Get The Party Started & The Living Tree. So 2007 became a busy year for her after all. She helicoptered into the Glastonbury Festival and won the festival crowd over with a wonderful performance of her new songs and of course her old hits. Below a radio interview by Simon May with Dame Shirley.
Today a repost FROM THE ARCHIVE 398 -1972. A few weeks ago I saw that a website copied and used this post but unfortunately the links for the songs were not working anymore. Also I now found out that the intro music used on All About Shirley is from the Diamonds Are Forever James Bond movie soundtrack. Below that one also in good quality.
Some of the songs Shirley Bassey performed on All About Shirley (Show of the Week 1972) were released in Germany on an LP. called ‘Gut gestimmt’. By clicking the players below you can listen to the songs in good quality stereo.
‘All about Shirley’ is a fantastic British-German documentary filmed by the BBC in 1972. The recordings took place in the studio in Germany (Hamburg) and in Sardinia (Italy) where Shirley had her second home at the time named “Tiger Bay” in Porto Rotondo at the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia Italy. It gives a wonderful insight of how her life was at that time.
